Small Business Question: How Many Social Media Platforms Should Your Business Be On?

I get asked this a lot, and my advice is to only be on one or two platforms. You need to able to realistically post and manage your social media consistently. If you don’t think you can manage two accounts, then just stick with one and do that one really well.

Unfortunately though, our customers can easily be on multiple channels. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Snapchat and the list goes on. So the official recommendation would be to only concentrate on one or two platforms BUT you need to have a presence on any other platform your target market is using.

Let’s use an example. Say you’re a florist in an inner city suburb and your target market is local female residents aged 35 – 55. You know that Facebook and Instagram will be a great bet for where your target market is playing online. You only have time to post and manage to these two platforms. BUT, your target market may also have a Linkedin, Pinterest or Youtube account. So what do you do? The answer is to create accounts on these other platforms and keep them warm with occasional posts. These occasional posts should point or direct your followers to your Facebook, Instagram or website – the places where you’re spending most of your time and effort.

It’s worth mentioning that if you have a plethora of social media accounts that you are not posting to at all, I would recommend doing an analysis on whether you want to keep them or not. If you’re going to keep them, start posting to them at a rate that is workable for you and your business. If you have no intention of ever posting there again, delete the account.

And that’s all I have for this week folks! If you have any questions about social media or running a small business, please don’t hesitate to send me an email: In the meantime, stay engaged, be present and have fun!
